Touchet Crochet: DIY Handicraft Crochet Kit for Beginners and How to Really Learn to Crochet
Prognosis: Poor
This coaster set is definitely not for beginners. First off it has you starting with 2.5 mm diameter hook when the recommendations for beginners is typically at 5 to 6 mm diameter crochet hook. The yarn for this project is also very soft which feels nice but crochet yarn is typically stiffer and easier to keep on the hook. I had to hand this project over to a master crocheter. They even had to make changes to the pattern. The videos included seemed easy enough to follow but I could not replicate their work after dozens of attempts.
Treatment Plan: Learn the basics of crochet before starting this project. I learned the basics of crochet such as the slip knot, chaining, single crochet stitch, double crochet stitch and half double crochet stitch, and the magic ring from you tube videos. Below are links to the videos I found most helpful. Learning these techniques will get you through most beginner projects. You’ll need a 5.0 mm or 5.5 mm crochet hook, basic yarn such as Red Heart brand, and scissors.
Slip Knot, Chaining, and Single Crochet: This video takes things super slow which is great when you are starting your crochet knowledge from level 0.
Double Crochet and Half Double Crochet: I really enjoy the videos from Goodknit Kisses. They are easy to follow and you can work as you watch.
Magic Ring: This video was the easiest for me to replicate this technique. There are several correct ways to make a magic ring and its a necessary skill for making anything round like a bag, hat, or circle. You tube has tons of videos on how to make a magic ring so search for ‘magic ring crochet for beginners’ and find the way that works best for you.
